When I first started learning affiliate marketing, affiliate links sounded more technical than they really are.
An affiliate link is a special web address containing a unique tracking code. When someone clicks that link and completes a qualifying purchase, the company can identify who referred the customer and may pay that person a commission.
The customer usually pays the normal price. The link simply gives the company a way to track the referral.
A simple example
Imagine you recommend a $100 email marketing tool.
The company’s affiliate program pays a 20% commission. Someone purchases through your affiliate link, so you could earn $20.
The customer usually pays the same price whether or not they use your affiliate link. The commission is paid by the company and is not added to the customer’s purchase price.
How the process works
- You apply to a company’s affiliate program.
- The company approves you.
- You receive a unique affiliate link.
- You share helpful content about the product.
- Someone clicks your link.
- The company tracks the referral.
- If the person completes the required action, you may earn a commission.
That required action could be a purchase, free-trial signup, or another result defined by the program. Every program has its own commission rates, tracking period, payment rules, and restrictions.
What an affiliate link does not do
An affiliate link is not a magic money link.
Posting it everywhere does not automatically produce sales. People still need a reason to trust your recommendation and believe the product will solve a real problem.
The stronger approach is:
Helpful content → trust → relevant recommendation → affiliate link
The approach I’m following puts the audience and their problem before the product or commission.
One important rule
Tell people when a link is an affiliate link.
A clear disclosure could say:
I may earn a commission if you purchase through this link, at no additional cost to you.
Place the disclosure where people can easily notice it, close to the recommendation. Do not hide it at the bottom of a giant pile of hashtags.

An affiliate link is simply the tracking tool.
The real job is helping the right person understand a problem, compare their options, and make a good decision. No Lamborghinis, no link-spamming, just useful recommendations and clear disclosure.
