Why I’m Starting Affiliate Marketing From Scratch While Working Full Time

I’ve been interested in making money online for years, but interest and action are two very different things. I’ve started websites, explored different business ideas, purchased courses, and chased more than a few shiny objects. What I haven’t done is stay focused on one clear path long enough to see what is realistically possible.

That changes now.

I’m starting affiliate marketing from scratch while working a full-time job, managing family responsibilities, and fitting this project into roughly 6 to 10 hours each week. I’m not an affiliate marketing expert, and I haven’t earned my first online commission yet. This blog will document the actual process, including the steps I follow, tools I use, money I spend, mistakes I make, and results I achieve.

Why I’m Starting Now

I’m grateful for the career and life I’ve built, but I also know that relying on one primary source of income comes with risk. Jobs change, companies restructure, expenses grow, and life has a funny way of sending bills at the exact moment you were starting to feel comfortable.

I want to build an additional income stream that can help us pay down debt, grow our savings, afford more experiences as a family, and create a backup plan for the future. I’m not expecting affiliate marketing to replace my income overnight. My first goal is much smaller and more realistic: earn my first commission, then work toward a consistent $500 in monthly profit.

More importantly, I want to prove to myself that I can stay focused, follow a clear plan, and build something steadily alongside a demanding full-time job.

Why Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing appeals to me because I don’t need to create my own product, manage inventory, ship orders, or handle customer service. Instead, I can focus on creating useful content, helping people understand their options, and recommending products or services that genuinely fit their needs.

The startup costs can also be relatively low compared with many traditional businesses. I already have a website, access to basic content tools, and years of professional experience communicating with people and solving problems. That doesn’t guarantee success, but it gives me a reasonable place to begin.

I also like that affiliate marketing is performance-based. I only earn money when someone takes a qualifying action through an affiliate link. That means I’ll need to earn attention and trust before I ever earn a commission. It may not be quick or easy, but it feels like a business model I can build gradually around my existing schedule.

The Rules I’m Following

I know one of my biggest risks is getting distracted by new tools, courses, and opportunities before giving the current plan enough time to work. To stay focused, I’m following a few simple rules:

1. Follow one clear plan at a time. I’m using an audience-first approach inspired primarily by Pat Flynn’s affiliate marketing principles.
2. Focus on helping before selling. My content should solve a problem or answer a real beginner question before introducing a product.
3. Recommend only what I can honestly evaluate. I’ll clearly explain whether I purchased, tested, or personally used something.
4. Disclose affiliate relationships. If I may earn a commission from a link, I’ll say so clearly.
5. Track the real numbers. I’ll document the time I spend, money I invest, content I publish, traffic I receive, and commissions I earn.
6. Avoid expensive shortcuts. I’m not buying more courses or done-for-you systems simply because progress feels slow.
7. Stay consistent before changing direction. I want to give this process a fair chance instead of restarting every few weeks.

These rules may not make the journey faster, but they should help me build something honest, sustainable, and easier to learn from.

What I’ll Share Along the Way

As I work through this process, I’ll share the real details, not just the polished highlights. That includes the tools and courses I test, the content I create, the time I spend, the money I invest, and the results I get.

I’ll also share the mistakes, distractions, failed ideas, and moments when progress feels slower than I hoped. I think those parts are just as valuable as the wins, especially for other beginners trying to build something around a full-time job and a busy life.

My goal is not to make affiliate marketing look easier than it is. It is to show what the process actually looks like, one step at a time, and help other beginners make better decisions from what I learn.

My Starting Point

At the time of writing, I have earned $0 through affiliate marketing. I have a website, one public beginner article, and social profiles on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, but I do not have an email list, a proven content system, or an audience regularly purchasing through my recommendations.

I’m approved to promote several affiliate products, but I’m not comfortable recommending them simply because a commission is available. Until I can properly evaluate a product and explain who it is genuinely right for, I would rather leave it off the site.

What I do have is experience in sales, communication, organization, and working through problems. I also have access to AI tools and roughly 6 to 10 hours each week to give this a serious attempt. My biggest challenge will not be finding more information. It will be staying focused, following the plan, and consistently completing the next step.

This is my starting line. By documenting it honestly, I’ll be able to look back and measure what actually changed, rather than relying on vague feelings about whether I’m making progress.

My First Milestone

My first milestone is simple: earn one genuine affiliate commission from content I created and a product or service I can honestly recommend.

That first sale will not make me financially free, but it will prove that the process can work. After that, my next goal will be to reach $500 in monthly profit without relying on exaggerated claims, spammy tactics, or constant course hopping.

I want to reach those goals by building useful content, earning trust, staying consistent, and improving based on real results. However long it takes, I would rather build something slowly that I understand than rush into a system I cannot maintain.

What Happens Next

From here, I’ll continue working through the process one step at a time. My immediate focus is building a strong foundation, understanding my audience, creating helpful beginner content, and eventually choosing a small number of affiliate products I can confidently recommend.

I’ll share updates as I reach meaningful milestones, including what I completed, what took longer than expected, what I learned, and what I plan to do next.

This is the beginning of the journey, not a success story written after the fact. I don’t know exactly how long it will take or what the results will be, but I’m committed to giving the process a fair chance and documenting it honestly along the way.
